What is IFComp doing???

Back to back Bruno post days: Bruno's post here about the 12 AI-using IFComp submissions is a must-read.

I realize that the IF community has a certain trauma around gatekeeping of what 'counts as IF' but I don't think a prompt you're meant to paste into chatGPT 'counts as IF' in any meaningful sense.

Another must-read: the materials submitted for the submission Bruno is referencing in the above quote. This submission is apparently a prompt you paste into ChatGPT in order to generate an experience the creator believes they have somehow "designed." But reading the chat history of its walkthrough, which occurred in ChatGPT, reveals that the creator does not understand how this technology works - the prompt asks the LLM to do things like roll "dice," which it absolutely cannot do. The submission also comes with a chat log which reveals that the prompt itself was "edited" by ChatGPT within a session and "tested" within that same session. It's kind of like the creator submitted a video of their classmate doing their homework as proof that they did their homework.

I am in agreement with Michael Klamerus that this kind of material simply shouldn't be allowed in jams and competitions of this sort, and in particular not in IFComp.

This is what they're currently saying about themselves:

Another evolving area is the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI). The community remains divided on its role in interactive fiction, and the technology itself continues to change rapidly. Our stance for the past two years has been to require transparency but to otherwise allow GAI. On the entry form, authors are asked to declare most uses of GAI in their work. After last year’s competition, we expected to see a flood of feedback about AI in the post-comp survey. In reality, only about 10 percent of respondents mentioned it. Based on that, we kept the same policy for 2025.

"We didn't do anything because not enough people complained" is a great way to end up becoming a goddamn joke. The role of an organization's leadership is to act before joke status is achieved!!
