Week wrap-up: Nov. 10
Woah, what a week. Lol and lmao. Here's some stuff I've been looking at:
i became an anarchist while working for the nevada state democratic party - jesse mason
This fantastic blog post goes into the institutional rot and classism that's holding the Democratic Party back. There's energy in this country for leftists to do real organizing and make real promises to real people. But the party is not set up to reward that kind of thing. It's set up to use those people, and grind them into the dirt, and bust their unions.
Billy Idol's Cyberpunk Software
Billy Idol's album Cyberpunk had a tie-in floppy disc, and it is incredible.
The creator, Jamie Levy, linked to her site in the comments of that video, and described her work in the early 90s as "electronic disc magazines." So I poked around her site and found a PDF of a Boston Globe article which says:
Idol wisely harnessed some of the wisest minds in West Coast cyberpunk, among them Jamie Levy, 27, a Los Angeles native who publishes books and magazines on floppy discs under the Electronic Hollywood imprint.
"He bought one of my discs at a bookstore in Hollywood," Levy said, "and he called everybody together at his house in the Hollywood Hills to have a cyber-meeting, although it turned into more of a party."
Levy has gone on to be an extremely corporate business consultant, and has a truly fascinating (derogatory) Wikipedia page which consists entirely of stuff that you might imagine if someone said "early 90s web guru from the depths of Hollywood" to you, right down to her role working at IBM while also trying to start some kind of art salon movement. What is a cyberpunk, really? Do cyberpunks go on to write the definitive book on UX business strategy for O'Reilly?

I haven't had a chance to play this new microgame from Nic Tringali yet, but I did enjoy checking out their development writeup here!
IGF Games I Want To Talk About 2025 - Aura Triolo
