Watch this guy cook rice on the beach

DJ Petesake, an LA-area bike and transit youtuber, recently released a video of himself going on an odyssey to cook white rice in a dutch oven at a beach firepit at like, six in the morning:

This is a pretty preposterous video - he is cooking white rice for breakfast after riding transit and biking for 2 hours or so - but it does capture the exact vibe that every bike adventure in the LA area tends to give me. A lot of the time, you'll plan to do something fun or weird on bikes and transit, and you'll spend the next several hours navigating a Rube Goldberg machine of surprises and disasters. I usually plan my adventures as a loop route so that I'm not going so far I can't just bail or change plans.

One of the best things about cycling is that if you fail to achieve your plans, you can always pull over to a restaurant, chain up in direct view of your table, and eat something great instead. No worrying about parking. Instant access to the front of the restaurant and whatever menus it has stuck in the windows. Zero friction involved. The journey is now a food journey. That's perfect.
