Read 3D Workers Island
I missed this when it came out last year, but yesterday a friend tipped me off to a fairly short webcomic called 3D Workers Island, about an online community which is investigating a procedurally generated island screensaver in the early 2000s. The comic is presented as a series of screenshots: webpages, forums, and of the titular screensaver. I read the whole thing in about 30 minutes. You can find it on itch.io or this website, which allows you to save your spot a little better.
After finishing the comic, I recommend reading what the creator's fans are saying about it online... life imitates art!!! It's also pretty clear that the creator is baiting this kind of behavior... the story is probably scarier if you read it a second time, having immersed yourself in 3000-word fan theory posts. :)
It's a quick read! I recommend checking it out.
