Laura Michet's Blog

Late week wrap-up: Dec 17

It's been a while. Here's stuff I read recently:

Scenes from this year's "Bike Kill" event in Red Hook (2021)

A great article about a bike punk kind of event which happens yearly in October in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Some crazy photos. This article was written about the 2021 event.

Alleged CEO Shooter Luigi Mangione Was Radicalized by Pain

Great article about how a guy with completely normie Joe Rogan style silicon valley politics probably ended up choosing assassination. The most arresting thing about Luigi has been how normie he is, really. The ideas he toyed with are the kinds of things millions of young men in the US believe. He was not at all a radical. I was also interested by this more local article from Hawaii which really digs into how normie and mass-market and, like, airport-bookstore the titles he was reading with his book club were.

Who is Covering Indie Games? Lots of People

Appreciated this article from Michael Klamerus about people who cover indie games on blogs right now.

The Wreck of the Grand Romance

Loved this short piece from Emma Humphries about a dramatically wrecked vessel in the SF Bay Area.

Normal Gossip for Dungeon Masters

Nic Tringali writes about how the podcast Normal Gossip contains roleplaying prompts. It's a great podcast and this is a very fun way to think about it! The show gets a lot of mileage out of asking guests to inhabit the roles of the characters in the story and think about how they could have done things better. I've definitely noticed how careful the hosts are about asking these kinds of questions and encouraging the guests to debate them.

Shakespeare: The Animated Tales (1992)

I enjoyed this description of an animated Shakespeare TV show from the early 90s on Debutniverse. It's on my list of things to hunt down and watch this holiday season, now.

Break.up on Steam

My friend Cass Lugo is releasing a game on steam soon! It's a twist on the block-breaking genre. I've been glad to play it a couple times during development and have been excited to watch it take shape. You can find it here.
