Discord's age ID data leaked a bunch of private info
Like everyone has been saying, once you start demanding age verification for users, the risk of leaks becomes much more severe.
A data breach at Discord has leaked a ton of users' government licenses, photographs, and other identifying information. I get the sense that some people feel like the activists who talk about keeping the internet free and open are just... inventing rube-goldberg-esque situations via which PII could be leaked, but they're not. This stuff happens all the time and worrying about it is extremely important and honestly very practical. When security experts tell you "this is a security risk," they're not just running their mouths. They're not inventing a what-if scenario. They're describing an eventuality they see every day at work.
You're never going to get a class-action payout from this kind of thing that makes the personal hassle and risk worth it. I've learned payout amounts for some other data breaches in the past, and my friends who were in those class actions feel like they didn't get even close to the amount of money that would have made them feel whole.
The best, safest, simplest solution is to simply not require age verification at all. These laws do not protect children, and they put everyone at risk.
