Check out this one-meter photography project
I seem to recall maybe hearing about the 2018 version of this sometime in the last six years?? But Chris Helzer, a guy who works for The Nature Conservancy in Nebraska, recently completed his second attempt to photograph all the plants and animals he saw throughout the year in a one-meter chunk of replanted prairie grassland in Nebraska. You can see his work on the project here.
There are a bunch of sub-pages on Helzer's blog collecting photos from different seasons in the year. A lot of them are incredible bug photos. Check out his personal selection of the project's best photos.
Helzer was able to identify and photograph over 300 species of organisms in his single meter, in addition to other creatures he was able to recognize but not photograph. It's crazy what diversity of critters you can find in a single place throughout a year!!
Whenever I go to take pictures of plants, I'm constantly also surrounded by bazillions of bugs that I know are present but cannot photograph or begin to identify. Most of the bugs I've photographed are honey bees, because that's about as big and slow as a bug has to be for me to get a picture of it. I'm incredibly impressed at how many bugs Helzer got. I recently purchased an extremely cheap bit of plastic that allows my camera to do "macro" photography. I am trying to get better at taking pictures of bugs, but it's insanely hard. Anyone who can do it well is a wizard!!
