Audio design school is gonna make you podrace

Something I noticed a few years ago: there are quite a lot of videos on YouTube which consist of the video from the Episode 1 pod race, but with custom sounds. Audio design students make them for class assignments.

Here's one:

Here's another:

Most of the time, when I go looking for these, I can find 5-6 of them pretty easily, without hunting. I think that this must be a sound design class assignment either at a specific university program, or at university programs generally.

It seems like a pretty good assignment! There's a lot of room for creativity here. If you search "sound design class project" on YouTube, you can find people doing this for Monster's Inc, which also seems to be some professor's favorite movie to assign. Stuff from Marvel also has a ton of results. It's particularly delightful when the students do their own voice acting.

If a movie has zero sci-fi, fantasy, or imaginary-technology elements in it, you are less likely to find student sound projects on YouTube. But here are a few which surprised me:

The movie I looked for and was most upset about not finding student audio for was Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. I recommend searching some of your favorite non-famous-action-movie films and seeing which ones do and don't get assigned in college classes... it's an interesting spread!
