A second Bruno genre classification has landed
Bruno has blessed us yet again with a blog post about videogame genres.
This one is about immersive sims. When we made Skin Deep, we definitely called it an "immersive sim" to one another, but we didn't always use that term in marketing for a variety of reasons. Genre terms are useful both for critique and marketing, and some genre terms carry a lot of baggage in specific contexts. Skin Deep has "the immersive sim nature," as Bruno discusses in his blog post, but it doesn't have all of the superficial elements that some people really believe an immersive sim absolutely needs (like progression of the main plot within the meat of each level).
I like Bruno's "São Paulo Interpretation" because it's pretty comprehensive and very gentle as genre classification systems go. It also discards this weird idea that a lot of people seem to have, where there are only like five or six immersive sims, or whatever, all made by the same Lineage Of Guys.
I do think it's a real genre; I think it's useful to discuss as a genre; you won't catch me discussing it any further than this. I will share this blog post with you, however. Enjoy!!
