You should check out Forbidden Solitaire

I've played hours of Forbidden Solitaire in my hotel room on this vacation... it's very good! It's a wonderful little bit of throwbacky pastiche, and a wonderful little solitaire game.

The premise of the game is that, in 2019, you found a cheap copy of a dark, violent old PC game you wanted to play back when you were a child in the 1990s. Your mother didn't let you play back then... so you're playing now, with commentary from your sister, who sends you chat messages while you play.

You load into a very simple fake desktop environment and launch the game, Forbidden Solitaire, with a little sequence that imitates the sounds of a CD-ROM drive reading a disc. It's extremely nostalgic - I found it surprising and cool and pretty creepy to suddenly hear my drive-less laptop making perfectly accurate CD-ROM sounds.

The game also has a shit ton of absolutely incredible prerendered 3D art made in imitation of the garish, highly-textured, neon-lit style of the time. It looks amazing, and the sound design matches it. It's super fun and weird and entertaining to see this game boot up a second, fake game in a little letterboxed 4-by-3, then and start slapping the most accurate throwback art imaginable at you.

And it's gross! It's the kind of thing I wouldn't have been allowed to look at at the time, either. I love how distorted and bad and non-scary the gross stuff is... it really achieves that sense of an artist struggling to express their vision with crude tools and technical limitations. Here are some screenshots:

I think the way this game looks is definitely the most striking and fun thing about it. The solitaire is also good, however! It's got a bunch of unusual mechanics folded in, a battle system, cards that explode with maggots, etc. Great stuff.

I haven't quite finished it yet, but I've gotten the vast majority of the Steam achievements, so I think I'm pretty close. But I can already say that this is special and weird, particularly if you are thirty-or-forty years old. Or fifty. I don't know. If you remember how striking and fun and cool digital art looked back then, and if you want to reconnect with something that makes you admire and appreciate that art for itself, then I recommend this. Shit looked great back then, actually. Everything should be lit like the front window of a dive bar!!
