You gotta see You Can See Everything
I can't speak too much about what happens in Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenhiem's insane documentary about Elizabeth Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans. There are too many good twists and I do not want to give them away.
I'll just say that you should do everything you can to see this movie as quickly as possible, that it strikes me as an instant classic, and that Nathan Fielder (and Oppenheim, of course) is possibly the most compelling documentarian alive. If you can see it in a big theater, do that. Mine was insanely vocal, full of gasps and constant scattered, confused laughter. It's really "confrontation with the void" shit, and it's good to have company when you step into the void.
Fielder is a perfect companion for any journey into the void... because whatever is going on with his brain is perfectly suited to precisely this situation. When dealing with bizarre rich people, Fielder's characteristic interpersonal awkwardness suddenly turns him into a perfect kind of everyman. I am completely in shock that the guy who did Nathan For You somehow found a way to turn himself into a universally sympathetic "straight man." His stunned confusion is the audience's stunned confusion. His refusal to assume what other people are thinking or feeling or desiring, his willingness to ask, in this context just becomes a kind of everyman curiosity rather than a social gaffe. He's the most powerful man alive, for real. What is the point of being socially adept or interpersonally "normal" around people like Elizabeth and her husband, anyway? I was completely bowled over by everything I saw. The last hour of the movie is some of the most dynamic shit I have ever seen in a theater.
Also, it's crazy, but this movie is extremely beautiful. And it sounds great. Instant classic shit. You gotta see it. I am probably gonna go see it again!
