The VGHF freed Cookie's Bustle

Cookie's Bustle is a very weird videogame. It's obscure enough that you've probably only heard of it if you've got friends who are real connoisseurs - I only first heard about it because I saw my friends with the strangest and most obscure taste in odd games posting about it constantly.

It's remained obscure partially thanks to the attention of a copyright troll who issued numerous DMCA takedowns against fair-use Cookie's Bustle content like fanart, let's play videos, or even just descriptions of the game's content.

The Video Game History Foundation just published a post describing how they stopped this. It turns out that the troll is actually unable to prove his ownership of the game, but was nevertheless able to exploit a UK-based videogame trade group to issue automated takedown requests on his behalf. The story is pretty crazy and I'm very, very impressed that the VGHF pursued this long enough to free the game.

If you have a couple minutes, I really do recommend watching the very beginning of the game's longplay on the VGHF website. I do not understand any of the Japanese dialogue, but there's a lot of English text on screen and the stuff happening is just really, really strange and funny and unsettling. Cookie is a 5 year old girl who turns into a small teddybear, and goes to an island supposedly inhabited by little alien Greys in order to participate in some kind of intergalactic olympics? She gets physically kicked off a bus on the island by an angry driver. Then the bus gets shot up by two men in a jeep, who are immediately killed by a military helicopter. At one point I skipped ahead in the video to discover Cookie walking into a "Sports Coliseum" toward a series of activities that included hammer throwing, sky diving, hurdle jumping, swimming, and "Clay," which I can only assume is clay shooting. Truly, perfect sports for a toddler who is also a teddybear. Then I skipped ahead again and found Cookie getting into a minecart next to a sign that said "FOR SOUTH JAIL". She rode the minecart through the jungle toward the jail in a cutscene that reminded me of a rollercoaster sim. We're very lucky the VGHF put the work into saving this stuff!!
