Still using the XTEink X4

In late March, I wrote that I'd acquired a tiny, nearly credit-card-sized e-reader and had been regularly using it.

I still am! Several months later, it remains in the main bag I use when I leave the house, and I use it most days of the week. I've since used it to read numerous old mystery novels (as research for a project) completely comfortably. I recently kicked off reading a bunch of communist theory... also as research for a project. Much of my "job" right now is reading, so it's good to have an e-reader.

It was definitely successful at getting me to adjust my overall behavior and include more reading time in my day. I imagine that I would have done this even if I had bought a more conventional e-reader... but it definitely helps that the XTEink is so small. It's easier to read on the train than my phone, basically. I can stick it directly in my pocket without having to power it down or worry about accidentally triggering a touchscreen.

I did make one additional self-indulgent purchase in order to make the device more cute and sturdy... I bought a fake miniature book cover for it on Etsy:

Since I got it, several friends have now also reported getting one, and as far as I can tell, everyone's pleased. It's cheap as hell, extremely tiny, very customizable, and it does the job it claims to do. I've had only a few epubs render strangely on the device, and I imagine that those problems would be fixed if I bothered to update the firmware.

Anyway... it's still good! I still use it!

Note: my old blog post mentioned that my husband had been using the same Kindle device for 14 years. Since that post, Amazon actually quit supporting his device! He jailbroke it, then decided that he could probably just get himself a more modern device and take the fourteen years as a win. He's currently using a Kobo. Kind of crazy that this all happened in the few months since I wrote that first post!
