Interesting/bad bug to see indoors
I've learned recently that there is a type of wasp called an ensign wasp. they can get pretty large and weird-looking. I'll just say that someone in my life recently found one indoors and told me about it after a day of feeling a little terrorized by it.
I obtained a picture, immediately looked these wasps up, and learned that many of these wasps lay their eggs inside cockroach egg cases! We don't know what species this is specifically, but the genus is believed to focus mainly on roaches. So I guess if you see one indoors, it's possible that it may have come indoors to hunt for roaches...? Or perhaps it was even born indoors, from the roach egg cases! Not a great realization! The kicker is that we discovered that there is indeed a just-discovered roach infestation in the place where we found the wasp, and that people have recently seen juvenile roaches there. Mystery solved??
Anyway, I love getting to experience little mysteries like this because of iNat. They're not actually super common - the vast majority of stuff I see or even stuff my friends ask me about is super routine and common. So it's exciting when something like this provides a little story with a beginning, middle, and end...
