I recommend this article about game cloning
This article from Nicole Carpenter about the business of "cloning" games is pretty fascinating. The article's headline is about how AI makes cloning games easier... but the bulk of the article is just about the business of cloning. There have been pretty egregious clone companies operating all over the world for years, and they definitely seem to have had strategies for cranking these games out before the era of LLM coding, too. Some of these clone companies seem to have been relying on reskinned Unity game templates for a big part of their business, for instance.
For years I've been thinking about whether my interest in making text-heavy games is smart or stupid. Many text-heavy games play badly with streamers - and if a player learns about their games mainly from streamers, watching a streamer play all the way through your story game isn't going to do much to convince them that they now have to buy it themselves. They know the ending, after all! Text isn't particularly visually dynamic, either... and if a game isn't dynamic to watch, or "easy to screenshot," it's harder to sell.
I've recently been thinking, however, that focusing on text-heavy story games might be a good way to avoid some of the negative impacts of cloners. If someone clones your story game, they're just writing (or generating?) fanfiction, and I strongly believe that the original writer would maintain a kind of edge in that situation, having originated the characters or setting. Twilight, for example, was never knocked out of its popularity by the Twilight AU fanfictions that became actual moneymaking IPs. So I suspect the impact of getting a high-quality story game cloned would be different than it might be for a cloned action game, or card game, or pick-three roguelike.
Anyway, I recommend checking out the article - not because it seems to be pointing at a terrifying future, but because it seems to be pointing at more of the same dogshit present we already live in. The main thing this article convinced me of is that if I'm making anything story-based, whether that be text-based or first-person 3D, I should not worry about AI clones of my games right now. And if my theory about fanfiction holds, I shouldn't ever have to worry about them at all!
