Forced to get new phone due to diabetes

I've been forced to get a new phone because my diabetes equipment will cease communicating with it in 12 days.

I'm still using an iPhone X. I have been hanging onto this little bastard since 2018, the year that I went to work for Riot, which is fucking crazy. I think I've had the screen replaced like 5 times. The battery has been replaced 2 times. It turns out that replacing bits of a phone is an order of magnitude cheaper than buying a new one.

I highly recommend this strategy, genuinely. I loved the small size, the photos are fine, and all my apps kept running on it. Until now!!

I use a Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor... and the Dexcom app is going to stop communicating with my phone in two weeks. I both do and don't understand why a medical technology company would sunset support for older devices... I know there's a burden in supporting all of this older hardware, and I know that they're held to a higher performance standard than most other companies (because their software keeps people alive). But the app works!! It works fine. I wish I could still keep using it!!

Technically, I could keep using this phone if I were content to not use the Dexcom app and just use my insulin pump to read my blood sugar - or carry around the independent Dexcom base station machine, which is about the size of a pager and can read my blood sugar without the involvement of a phone at all. But I use the Dexcom app to share my blood sugar with my husband's phone, which has real health benefits for me. So I'm caving and buying a new phone.

While I'm unemployed, mind you!!!

Anyway: I loved my little iPhone X. You really can just keep using old hardware. Yes, it gets VERY hot while loading some websites. Yes, I had the last screen replacement installed by a dude who most certainly fucked it up, and the screen now sometimes just stops working entirely, and I have to reboot the whole thing to fix it. Yes, there are several apps I've wanted to download in the last month that wouldn't run on it.

Oh, also, the GPS hasn't worked properly in three years. It puts me within a few hundred yards of my actual location most of the time, but it's extremely imprecise and jittery. I suspect a hardware issue related to one of my battery or screen replacements, lmao.

But it fucking runs!! It runs fine. Argh!!! Give me a world where I can keep using this little bastard forever!!
